There are some things that will put a person at an increased risk for experiencing hemorrhoids.

  • If a person is having trouble with constipation therefore producing hard stool they can put themselves at risk of developing hemorrhoids due to the excessive straining during their bowel movements.
  • Sitting for an extended period of time can also increase the risk that a person has of developing a hemorrhoid problem. This includes sitting on the toilet for overly long periods of time.
  • Women that are pregnant will often suffer from hemorrhoids. This can be due to the increased pressure on the body and the pushing down on the anus. Pregnancy also causes changes in the body and may as a result increase the blood vessels around the anus.
  • Age does affect a person’s risk of developing hemorrhoids. People between the ages of 45 and 65 years old are at the greatest risk for developing hemorrhoids. They are more common among older men than older women. At this point in life the muscles around the pelvic floor and anus often start to weaken making it harder to pass stool.
  • Hemorrhoids are genetic. If a parent has hemorrhoids their child is likely to develop them as they age.
  • There are some other lifestyle factors that can put a person at a great risk for developing this condition.
  • People that are obese are at a great risk.
  • People that have to lift heavy objects on a regular basis are also more at risk. They are putting a great stain on the body which will increase their risk of developing hemorrhoids.
